D—ARTS X YOUKI TALK: GAZE
21.11.2025, 4:30 PM
MEDIENKULTURHAUS WELS

What does it actually mean to look and to watch? bell hooks speaks of critical spectatorship, and we repeatedly talk about gaze — white gaze, male gaze, imperial gaze (…) — but what does that actually mean?

What role do looking and gaze politics play in everyday life, on screen, and in cinema? How are gaze and power related? What do we learn and understand through watching about familiarity, witnessing, and voyeurism when we examine the act of watching? How can we decipher and name violent forms of looking? In this workshop, we invite you to practice and reflect on critical spectatorship together.

After a short introduction by D—Arts, Project Office for Diversity, we will address these questions in a workshop and exchange our experiences and visions. Here, local perspectives meet global perspectives, problems meet utopias, and newcomers meet those who have been involved for some time, in order to exchange ideas about urgent issues and scope for action at the interface between film cultures and anti-discrimination practices.
